Not Enough To Say

as God is my witness,
we owe you more than
we can ever pay --
not that the cause was
noble or true,
since it was neither,
but that did not matter
to you --
you went anyway,
and you are owed large
by all of us, not just
those in charge,
for the limbs you left
on the battlefield today,
for your peace of mind
which has been taken away,
for the years lost
and every cost
that you gladly paid;
thank you for your service
is just not enough to say.
