filling time

it's amazing, all the things
that you don't really notice
when you are in love and really
wrapped up with someone:

how many threads there are
on the cuff of your sweater;

how messy your sock drawer has become;

the number of paperclips in
the dispenser on the desk;

how many times the blue jays
stare at you through the window
in the course of an hour or two,
and how they cock their heads
sideways when they notice the
tears streaming down your face;

and how disorganized the stack
of newspapers on the floor is;

and how your books and CDs
are not in alphabetical order;

and how slowly even a digital clock
marks the time until
the day is over.
