How You Know

when she is in the raindrops,
or peeking out from the laundry basket;

when she is behind you, on tiptoe, in the mirror,
as you shave;

when she is climbing the tree
outside your window,
or rubbing your headache away;

when she is every woman that you see;
when she is in every photo in a magazine;

when she sits next to you,
while you cry into your coffee;

when she listens to all of your ramblings;
when she sings harmony to every song
that comes on the radio, and even the ones
that you listen to on CD or mp3;

when you hear her marvelous giggle as you
think of something funny that you know she would
giggle at, and when you hear her laughter
when you drop your bread, butter-side down,
on the kitchen floor;

when her eyes fill all your dreams,
and she holds you close during your nightsweats;

when every random moment, in every regular day,
has her make an appearance:

that's how you know.
