Neda

On a street in Tehran,
yesterday,
as chaos stumbled,
screamed,
burned,
and tore through the city,
a 16 year-old girl,
peacefully demonstrating,
was shot through the heart
by a hidden sniper;

she fell to the pavement,
eyes open,
searching,
her legs splayed,
as her father
rushed to her side,
begging her to stay awake,
to fight to live;

and she died on that spot.

where people cry for justice,
and freedom,
and for the honest count
of their vote,
we all must stop and listen.
