I said goodbye to her at the doorway of the restaurant tonight,
And thanked her again for including me;
And instead of the polite "you're welcome" that I expected,
She flung her arms wide,
Like she used to do,
A few lifetimes ago,
And wished me a Merry Christmas,
And "all the best";
And I felt, for a moment,
Like she was trying to squeeze all the pain out of me.
Our three daughters just smiled,
And so did her husband.
