nothing at all

sprinkled
with the relative success
of harnessing
tiny bits and pieces
of all the power of the earth,
many of us have
succumbed
to the wild-eyed notion
of our possible superiority --
that we might possibly be
"in charge" of something,
anything -- ourselves even,
and then we moved on to the
ultimate conclusion
that we might be "in charge"
of everything -- that we
might be lords and masters
of all that we survey --
and then
comes
the hurricane,
the flood,
the fire,
the cancer,
the alzheimer's,
the osteoporosis:

and some of us realize
that we are "in charge" of
nothing at all.
