never

after her latest hammering,
while the vibration
still hummed in her ears,
she looked at me,
with the vacancy
of someone emptied
with an ice cream scoop,
one nerve ending
at a time,
and she said that
"'never' sounds pretty safe";

and for the first time,
I believed someone
who said that.
