your laughter

your laughter bursts out
when you least expect it,
but when I have worked a little to get it,
and it is quite a payoff:
it leads me to the joyous part of you,
of childhood dreams,
and mysteries;
of passion's screams,
and your histories;
and it gives me just a little bit more
of you:
to know,
to consider,
to imagine,
painting in the spots
that you leave blank on your canvas,
so that only someone like me,
with patience and inquisitiveness,
will study
and complete the portrait,
with what is still the best camera:
the mind's eye,
capturing you,
and your laughter.
