the author is

sometimes saddened,
when along comes someone,
who thinks that they are the next Hemingway,
and yet cannot describe how to catch,
and properly throw back, a rainbow trout;

sometimes saddened,
when along comes someone,
who thinks that they are the next Faulkner,
and yet cannot tell the reader one damned trait
of a rounder;

sometimes maddened
when along comes someone,
who thinks that they are the next Bukowski,
and yet cannot tell the reader,
who was Chinaski, or who was the leader;

sometimes saddened
when along comes someone,
who thinks that they are the next Updike,
who cannot tell one teen-age bathing suit,
from another;

then reminded, in an etymological epiphany,
that all that follows
is borne of what preceded thee.
